Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city.

翻译：从前有两只老鼠，它们是非常要好的朋友。其中一只老鼠居住在乡下，而另一只老鼠却住在城里。

 

After many years the country mouse saw the city mouse; he said "Do come and see me at my house in the country." So the city mouse went.

翻译：很多年以后，当乡下老鼠有一次碰到城里老鼠，它对城里老鼠说：“请务必要来我位于乡下的家看一看。”于是城里老鼠就过去了。

 

The city mouse said "This food is not good and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come there and live in the city.

翻译：城里老鼠说：“这东西一点也不好，你的房子也不好，为什么住在田地的洞里呢？你应该过来住在城市里。

 

You would live in a beautiful house made of stone. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city."

翻译：你可以住在用石头造的漂亮大房子里，你可以吃到美味的食物，你应该来到我城里的家看一看。”

 

The country mouse went to the house of the city mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise.

翻译：于是乡下老鼠来到了城里老鼠的房子里。它的房子非常漂亮，美味的食物也为他们放好了。可是正当他们要开始享用的时候，忽然二人听到很大的响声。

 

The city mouse cried " Run! Run! The cat is coming!" They ran away very quickly and hid.

翻译：城里老鼠大叫道：“快跑啊！快跑啊！猫来抓我们了！”他们快速地逃跑并躲了起来。

 

After some time they came out. When they came out the country mouse said "I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field.

翻译：过了一会儿，他们出来了。当他们出来的时候，乡下老鼠说：“我不喜欢住在城里，我还是喜欢住在我的田地地洞里。

 

For it is nicer to be poor and happy than to be rich and afraid."

翻译：虽然来说这样贫穷但是我非常快乐，比起虽然富有但却每时每刻都要提心吊胆的生活来说，要好的很多。”
